Dial Indicator
Another collaborative clock with Guy Marsden (2024)

Dial Indicator clock.jpg

Inside the black case is a linear actuator that moves the plunger of a dial indicator in order to estimate time with a single hour hand. The single needle of the dial is referenced relative to the screw heads located every 30 degrees, i.e. hour, around the perimeter of the clock face.

The indicator can move up to a total of 1" and the gauge displays its position with a resolution of .001".  One full rotation of the gauge represents a travel distance of 0.1". The high precision stepper motor has a resolution that can step in increments of .000125". The indicator's needle makes one full rotation around the dial every 12 hours in small steps every 3.75 seconds. To insure dial accuracy every 12 hours the plunger moves back down and the dial begins again at 12:00. Time is kept with a real time clock (RTC) module.
